Saint-Romain 2009, Alain Gras

This domaine, perched high above the Côte in Saint-Romain Le Haut has featured many times in Burgoblog. Is this a case of bribery? Certainly not! More a case of imbibery.... having visited the domaine most years since 2006 I have been impressed by the consistently high quality, the focus on fine, ripe fruit and the desire to fly the flag for the smaller appellations of Saint-Romain and Auxey-Duresses. Prior tasting notes for the Saint-Romain rouge in 2005 and 2006. The 2009 vintage favoured the appellations at higher altitude such as Saint-Romain with generous days of sunshine. This is reflected on the nose with fine blackberry aromas, hints of cassis and some licorice interlacing on the fruit fretwork. A delightful pinot noir nose. Excellent ripe, lively berry fruit on the palate ranges from blueberry to raspberry. A pleasure to imbibe. This is a soft, fruit-driven wine but the structure is there when you search for the ripe tannins. Without a doubt this wine is a real crowd-pleaser. Scores 23-25 / 30 for a Saint-Romain. Will evolve for another year before losing its charm.
